Music

START THE YEAR OFF ON A HIGH NOTE-PARTICIPATE IN MUSIC AT ST. PAUL!

Greetings! As the new Director of Music Ministry, I have been heartened by the warm welcome I’ve received this summer at St. Paul. What a wonderful congregation! I have enjoyed getting to know people every Sunday, both at our worship services and through working with the Chancel Choir, and I’m looking forward to getting to know you! As our church has recently undergone a change in the Sunday morning worship schedule, there have also been some adjustments made to the music ministry schedule, as noted in this month’s Epistle. Whether you are a current participant in music at SPUMC, or are considering joining us, please review the updated schedule. I hope you will read about the various music-making opportunities available, and consider making a joyful noise to the Lord through ringing or singing. There are opportunities for children, youth and adults.

PARTICIPATING IN MUSIC AT SPUMC: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do I Need to Be Able to Read Music?

No. We hope to create quality musical experiences and offerings for worship that are accessible to a wide range of musical abilities and experience. If you’ve never sung in a choir, or never rung handbells, please don’t let that stop you from participating.

Am I Good Enough to Be in the Choir?

Yes. No audition is necessary! If you have a song in your heart and are looking for a way to express it for the glory of God, but are unsure whether your abilities are suitable for either the choir or handbell ensemble, please contact Jessica. She will meet with you individually if you wish, to determine the best way for you to contribute to the music ministry. Or, just start coming to rehearsal!

Do I Have to Be at Every Rehearsal and Present Every Sunday?

No. While it’s wonderful if people can commit to regular participation, we know that people lead lives that often take them in many different directions. If you’d like to participate, even if you may not be able to do so regularly, please contact Jessica.

MUSIC OFFERINGS AT SPUMC

CHILDREN’S CHOIR                                                                       Sundays, 9:20-9:50 in the Choir Room

Rehearsal for the children’s choir, for children in grades 1 through 5, begins on Sunday, September 9, at 9:20 a.m. in the Choir Room. Children who attend the Awakening service with their parents will have the opportunity during the service to be dismissed to attend choir. Parents who attend the 11 a.m. Service are encouraged to come early prior to Sunday School (at 10 a.m.) and bring their child to the Choir Room for children’s choir. The children’s choir will perform at both the Awakening Service and the 11 a.m. Service on a single Sunday during the months of October, December, February, March and June.

YOUTH CHOIR: “St. Paul Singers”                                                 Sundays, 4:30-5:30 in the Choir Room

Rehearsal for St. Paul Singers, for youth in middle school and high school, begins on Sunday, September 16, at 4:30 p.m. in the Choir Room. Youth are encouraged to come participate in choir before Youth Group, which begins at 5:30. All youth who enjoy music and singing are encouraged to participate. No prior experience is necessary. We will be singing a wide variety of music, from contemporary Christian music to Christmas carols. Our goal will be for St. Paul Singers to sing in a worship service once per month. Important to note: Since youth group meets at Cokesbury UMC every-other month, we are still in the process of deciding the location of youth choir rehearsal during those months.

CHAPEL BELLS: For Adults and High School Students                 Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 in the Sanctuary

Make a joyful noise to the Lord! Enjoy making music with our beautiful English handbells. Prior experience is not necessary. Come join in the fun and fellowship. Rehearsals begin on Thursday, September 6th. Our goal will be to perform at the 11 a.m. worship service once per month. See you there!

CHANCEL CHOIR: Adult Vocal Ensemble                                         Thursdays, 7:30-9 in the Choir Room

Lift your voice in song for the glory of God, joining together as we sing songs of faith, exultation and prayer. Experience the joy of musical fellowship as a participant in the Chancel Choir! Prior experience is not necessary. Rehearsals already in progress, every Thursday evening. The Chancel Choir sings every Sunday at the 11 a.m. worship service, meeting prior to the service at 10:35 in the Choir Room.

ST PAUL UMC PRAISE BAND, “Raise the Praise”        First Saturday each month in the Fellowship Hall

Be part of the St Paul UMC praise team.  “Raise the Praise” sets a contemporary worship tone for the 9:00 Awakening Service each Sunday.  The praise team includes musicians, singers, audio visual support specialists, set-up and tear-down crews, and communion stewards.  The team meets at 8:00 each Sunday to set-up equipment, do sound checks, and rehearse selected numbers in preparation for the 9:00 Awakening Service.  The team is always looking for new members; there are many opportunities available to be part of the praise team.  If you are interested or need more information please contact Glen Phillips.
